Succeeding in the 21st Century requires more than just certification. You need relevant skill to complement the certificate to remain relevant. Below we will look at 3 skills children need to build on as they grow up.
A Skill is the ability to perform an activity in a competent manner. Skills can be classified into three;
■ TRANSFERABLE/FUNCTIONAL SKILLS: This involves actions taken to perform certain tasks and is transferable to different work functions. E.g. Organizational skills, Communication, Critical Thinking.
■ PERSONAL TRAITS: This entails personality characteristics that contribute to effectively performing a task. E.g. Diplomacy, Team work, Result-Oriented.
■ KNOWLEDGE -BASED: This implies knowledge of specific subjects, procedures, information, which is acquired through education, training and on-the-job experience. E.g. Creating of Mobile Apps, Web Development, Administrative Skills.
HOW TO TEACH THESE SKILLS TO CHILDREN?
One simple way to help children build these skills is through games and simulation exercises. The games can be outdoor or indoor, computer based or physical activities. Indoor games like Chess, Monopoly, Scrabble. Outdoor games like Football, Swimming, Table-tennis.
The place of skill acquisition cannot be over-emphasized in this 21st Century. Gone are the days when being a University Graduate was all it took to stand out. Today, the reverse is the case. You need Skills……Skill Up!
No matter the Passion and Purpose you pursue, without the above skills, you may not go far. You need to build skills set that will effectively allow you to leverage on your giftings and as well monetize them.
