The TeenCoders Experience

Who We Are

TeenCoders is a skills development platform that teaches children (4 – 16 years) to create digital products while learning 21st Century skills. It’s also the best centre to introduce STEM activities, Programming concepts, Mobile Apps building, Game design, Cartoon creation, Web development and Digital media to your children.

Interestingly, these skills are foundational as children begin to embrace the technologies of the future, including VR (Virtual Reality), AI (Artificial Intelligence), Embedded System, Machine Learning, Data Analysis and more.

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

Malcolm X

TeenCoders started in Port Harcourt in September, 2015, as an effort to help a little girl, Amarachi, have hands-on computer experience. One day, when Amarachi returned from school, Mr. Anietie, asked her a series of computer related questions, and she answered excellently well, and with ease. But when he brought out his laptop and asked her to use, she was scared and did not even know how to hold or use the mouse. The next day, Mr. Anietie invited about 20 other children, and the same thing occurred – excellent head knowledge, and no hands-on experience.

This prompted Mr. Anietie to approach some people for assistance – his boss, Mr. Ojo Akin-Longe of TND Press offered an office space and a laptop. Some friends volunteered to help in teaching (Mr. Promise, Mr. Godswill, students from AISEC Uniport, Mr. Kenneth, Mr. Jude). The plan was to teach children coding for free on weekends for one month.

Interestingly, by March 2016, Mr. Anietie resigned, and registered TeenCoders with the Corporate Affairs Commission CAC. The first school to adopt the TeenCoders Club was Akon Education Centre in Woji.

The Company grew very fast. That same year, the team went to Abuja for a program organized in partnership with the Office of the Wife of the President, and the Nigerian Communication Commission NCC. During this program, TeenCoders trained more than 100 girls on coding in one week.

By September, 2017 a branch was opened in Akwa Ibom State. In April 2018, we entered into partnership with a Lagos-based company. In 2019, TeenCoders’ student, Master Okaro Udugba, a 9 year old, Grade 4 pupil of Pleroma International School, Woji, won the MTN Hackathon Competition.

Presently, majority of the students that started the TeenCoders program are pursuing computer related careers in the University. Annually, TeenCoders trains more than 5,000 students and partners with 50 schools in 3 states.
