#CodeForSchoolsNG: Every child in school should learn how to code a computer.
Rivers State is now the 1st state in Nigeria where an organization has independently launched a coding curriculum for pupils from lower primary to upper secondary.
#CodeForSchoolsNG, which is an initiative of TeenCoders in partnership with the State Ministry of Education, will ensure that every child in school, (especially pupils in public school in low income, grassroots communities) will learn how to code a computer, the same way they learn Mathematics, English and other compulsory subjects.
Interestingly, funding for the project is provided by well-meaning individuals and organizations. The computers used for the project is provided for by the State.
WHY THE PROJECT?a) 12% of all job openings and 16.3% of all new wages in the developing world are in computing fields. And aside from the jobs, nations broadly realize that computer science is increasingly foundational to all 21st century careers.
b) As at 2016, in 148 developed economies of the world, (including UK, Japan, Qatar, Singapore, Russia, USA), to boost competitiveness and wellbeing, coding classes are mandatory for students between the ages of 5 and 16. These classes include learning creative computing, problem solving etc.
c) Presently, no state in Nigeria is offering computer programming (coding) to pupils at the primary level. Lagos is the only state in Nigeria that is implementing coding for Upper Primary and Secondary schools.
THE CURRICULUMThe curriculum is designed around four frameworks: Problem Solving Skills, Computational Thinking Skills, Personal Capability Skills and Programming Skills. Each module in the framework is integrated into the projects developed by the pupils.
It is believed that starting a greater percentage of the kids early in coding, is key in determining the socio-economic development of the nation.

WHY PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN RIVERS STATE?a) The Nigerian primary and secondary school curriculum offers computer studies but not coding. Developed countries teach coding not computer studies. With computer studies, pupils learn how to use technology. But with coding, pupils learn how to create the technology. Below is a simple difference between computer studies and coding.
b) There are more pupils in public (Government) schools than in private schools in Rivers State. Presently there is an estimated 8:3 ratio. This means that of the estimated 1,200,000 pupils in primary schools, 960,000 are in public schools. This number should not be neglected in any developmental or sustainable agenda in Rivers State.
c) 85% of private schools in Rivers State teach coding either as a subject or co-curricular activity (parents in these schools request for and fund these coding activities). 0% of public schools in Rivers State teach coding – and the reasons include manpower (teachers), resources (computers, textbooks), approvals and funding.
HOW TO SUPPORT THE PROJECT?Individuals, foundations or organizations can sponsor a school, or a number of pupils. Sponsors buy copies of the book (on coding) for the pupils, while TeenCoders will match it up by teaching the Pupils coding Free for the whole term. In majority of the schools, average number of pupils is 150 (Basic 1 to Basic 6). Sponsors that may not want to sponsor an entire school can sponsor a number of pupils in a school.

#CodeForSchoolsNG the AIM
The aim of the #CodeForSchoolsNG project is that every child in Nigeria should learn to code.
a) Users-To-Makers: The #CodeForSchoolsNG project will make kids in Rivers State, especially those in public schools, to be creators and not users, producers and not consumers of technology. This is achieved by including coding as a subject in the curriculum. This is a sustainable plan in preparation for the digital economy of the future.
b) Waste-To-Wealth: More than 100 government schools in Rivers State have about 30 computers each. These computers are underutilized, and in majority of the schools, are just lying in waste. The Project will convert this waste to wealth as part of a capacity development agenda of human resources that will help place the society among the developed economies of the world.
• In TeenCoders, the mission is to build skills needed for the digital future.
• Pupils (Primary 1-6) in the Coding classes have created: Mobile Apps for smart devices, 2D & 3D Educational Games for Desktop and Microsoft X-Box machines, 3D Animation of concepts in Mathematics, English, Basic Science etc. Students (JSS1-SSS3) have created School Websites, Desktop Software and Result Management Softwares for their schools.
GOAL OF THE PROJECT
The implementation plan shows that for Rivers State, by July 30th, 2019, the following will be achieved:
o 1,000 schools will have coding running as a subject.
o 1,000,000 pupils will complete different levels of coding programs.
o 1,000,000 coding books will be distributed to these pupils.
o Coding will be a subject in the State curriculum.
o 250 Teachers will receive complete Train-The-Trainer course on coding.
o A Trust Fund for Coding Development will be set up in the State. This will happen through the State Government budgetary allocation for coding and Private Partnerships.
